Marquess of Queensberry
The edition of The Spectator of January 13, 1973 included an item in Skinflint's City Diary headed 'Reject Shops'. As a result of this article Lord Queensberry instituted proceedings for libel against The Spectator which have been settled by our paying an appropriate sum by way of damages and costs.
The article stated that ". . the Reject China Shop, owned by the Marquess of Queensberry, though possibly occasionally selling a reject piece, does its main business supplying perfectly sound china, obtained from trade sources as rejected odds and ends at a slight discount to the unwary bargain hunter." It was also commented that the shop ran some risk of being guilty of misrepresentation in its publicity.
We now accept that the article was based on erroneous information and that there was no truth in the suggestions contained in it.
We would like to take this opportunity of expressing our unreserved apologies to Lord Queensberry.
