The Book and the Life. By C. J. Vaughan, D.D.
(Macmillan and Co.)— The principal interest of the four sermons which compose this volume lies in the fact that they contain an expression of Dr. Vaughan's opinion with regard to Bishop Colenso's criticism of the Old Testament. This opinion appears to be that, although the publication of the Bishop's objections is much to be regretted, still the only position which they assail—that of verbal inspiration—" is one which the Church of Christ, as a body, never occupied," and "which no true friend of the faith ever put forward." We entirely agree with Dr. Vaughan's views on the sub- ject of inspiration, and we heartily hope that he is right in his opinion that they are those of the majority of the Church.
