Make war on drugs too
From Andrzej Wilski Sir: Bruce Anderson's article (`Make war on terror, not drugs', 21 February) is truly absurd, not to say stupid and dangerous.
In the longer run it would be impossible to prevent or significantly reduce terrorism by means of war. The violence of war perpetrated by states can only breed more terrorist violence. Terrorism can be limited only by attending genuinely to injustices from which it mainly springs. In the case of terrorist acts carried out by Muslims, we really should acknowledge, without morally justifying the acts, their despair at the situation in the Holy Land and their fear of the Western degeneracies. On the other hand, war on drugs — that is opposing the production, spread and use of harmful chemicals — is absolutely necessary and also a useful outlet for the war instincts of nations. Such war, like all actions against criminal activities, has to be permanent. Without it the drugs will spread ever wider, with disastrous consequences for all affected societies. The Muslim world, with its very strong anti-drugs culture, would be a great ally in this war.
