NEWS OF THE WEEK.
THE great event of the week has been the crashing of the Irish revolt, or perhaps we should say of the desperate street fighting in Dublin, for, in spite of the destruction of property, estimated at nearly two millions sterling, and the very con- siderable loss of life, the movement does not really deserve a higher title. It only affected a minority of the Irish population, and even of that minority only a small proportion had their hearts in it. The figures are very difficult to come at, but apparently even when the movement was at its very highest point—i.e., on Tuesday week —there were only some fifteen thousand insurgents all told. But fifteen thousand men out of a Nationalist population of three millions is only a small proportion. The three millions, had they leen unanimous, could have provided fcur hundred thousand combatants.
