Editorial amnesia
From Mr Donald Macintyre Sir: With all respect to Stephen Glover (Media studies, 22 April), my interest in Northern Ireland long predates both my book on Peter Mandelson and his tenure as Secretary of State. I expect it will outlast both. My visits there, the first of which was in the early Seventies, may have been spo- radic but they were certainly more numer- ous before his appointment than after it. Come to think of it, I seem to remember reporting from Belfast on the then embry- onic peace process when the secretary of state was Peter Brooke, the Taoiseach was Charles Haughey, and the paper for which I then worked, the Independent on Sunday, was edited by a chap called Stephen Glover.
