Juliette's Weekly Frolic

Not so long ago the prospect of a Saturday at the races involved a Friday night of sleepless excitement, precariously dependent on the English climate, as even my powers of persuasion were taxed to drag my mother through torrential rain and icy winds for the (to her) questionable pleasure of freezing in the Silver Ring. I've long since taken my racing more calmly, so it was nice to find the fever returning at full strength in honour of this Coming Saturday, when I shall take off to Sandown for my first proper jump meeting of the season. Following weeks of brilliant Indian sunshine it wil doubtless turn wet and miserable, but that is of little account set against the illustrious cast that turn out for the £3,000 Plus Ackermann Skeaping Hurdle. Bula, Persian War, Boxer — it's as good as a Champion Hurdle, with the advantage of being much nearer home. Fred Winter sincerely believes the first-named suffered his one and only defeat at Newbury two weeks ago, but cramped odds and firm ground sway me towards the young upstart, Boxer. Last season's juvenile whizz kid tuned up on the flat a week ago, and as the only tenuous form line between the two actually falls in his favour — perhaps I am not quite so mad as would appear. Young Ash Leaf, the gamest mare in training, goes for an interesting pattern chase at Doncaster the same afternoon, however the highly-rated Tantalum is in opposition, who proved at Newbury that he has held on to the form that won the Worcester Porcelain and Totalisator Champion Chases. earlier this year.

Assets: E9.54. Outlay: e3 to win Boxer and Tantalum.
