and it oannot be right to take back with one hand the encouragement that was given with the other. If the present plan remains, the farmer is only too likely to roll off his beasts as quickly as possible in order to out what he believes, rightly or wrongly, will be his lames That means a shortage of meat at the beginning of next year. If the 60e. maximum could be changed to 65e. or 70s., and the time-limit could be extended from January to July, the problem, in our opinion, would be solved without inflicting hardship upon any one, and with the tolerable certainty of mahitaining the meat supply. •
