The Labour -Party Conference opened . at Birmingham - on Monday with
Mr. Lansbury in the chair. Mr. Laus- .bury's address was a characteristic performance. lie rebuked the' extremists,- as the 'new policy of the Labour Party; of course, required him' to do; but he contrived by little. emotional interludes to suggest that he had much sympathy with them. . .Perhaps Mr. Lansbury.'s most • remarkable statement Was hiS indignant repudiation of • any attempt " to unite our forces With' the deeadent remains of Liberalism." He added that such an attempt would be " foredoomed to failure for our one and only -goal is Socialism." Nevertheless, Mr. Snowden has definitely recommended co-operation.- with the Liberals, and so, rather unexpeetedly: has the 'ex-Editor of- the New Leader (the organ of the -Independent Labour Party), MT. H. N. Brailsford. In spite of Mr. Snowden's recom- mendation there is not in the least likely to be a plan of 'co:operation' before the' General Election. When the -General Election-is over the views of the Labour Party will be different—more .stubborn or more eonipliant; as the case may be. • - • • * . * *
