Two resignations

Sir: Recently a senior regional manager was sum- marily dismissed by the board of British Railways for offering a public criticism of the board's finan- cial acumen and administrative efficiency. A little earlier we witnessed the farce of a proffered, and ostentatiously rejected, resignation by the chairman of the National Coal Board following an incident in Aberfan.

One must, in all fairness, concede that there have been other times in the history of this country when the establishment—the boys who have the jobs—has shown an equally brute disregard for the sense of fair play innate in most of its subjects. J. M. Flood Abbots Lodge, Treford, Farnham, Surrey
