Irish mess
Sir: You have no business accusing Mr Heath of stupidity for proposing that Northern Ireland, under certain circumstances, should be "integrated" with the United Kingdom (September 29).
Ulster already is integrated with the United Kingdom and has been since 1801. The Queen is Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Ulster has twelve seats at Westminster. In proportion to the rest of the country it is entitled to twenty-four. The disproportion was decided in 1920 because Ulster, unlike the rest of the country, was given her own Parliament.
That Parliament was taken away (a dishonourable and disastrous course advocated by your own journal). If the present Parliament is also to be taken away because the lunatic system of forcing a coalition on a collection of bitter political enemies proves predictably unworkable, then the next step is simple: give Ulster her proper representation at Westminster.
I note that you are edging your way towards proposing a pull-out. When eventually you come to embrace this policy (which is precisely the policy of the IRA) what you will be advocating will be the dismemberment of this country and the bloodiest civil war since the seventeenth century.
I suppose that does not cut much ice in Gower Street. Ireland is on the other side of the sea.
, Why don't you advocate forcible i
tnde ndence for Wales and Scotland whil otr ?Tint? After all, Wales and Sco and are a drain on English wealth and given to voting Socialist.
