Episodes in My Life. By Sir John George Fraser. (Capetown
: Jute.) This interesting book by a veteran Bloemfontein lawyer throws much light on the history of the Orange Free State. The author was the son of an Aberdonian, who emigrated in 1824 to become a pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church. He was born at Beaufort West in 1840, and settled in the Free State in 1808. For some years he was Secretary to President l3rand and he played an active part in politics for many years, striving always to prevent the Free State from being used as a tool by Kruger and the fanatical Dutch party in the Transvaal. He shows how General Hertzog from 1907 onward deliberately stirred up racial strife in the Free State by his educational policy, making the use of Dutch compulsory in the schools. The work is well written and is illustrated with many portraits.
