Barrel Strawberries
Strawberries can be grown quite well in a barrel that has a number of two-inch holes cut in its slats. It takes up very little space, and with the help of a few sticks can easily be draped with net to keep birds away. The contents of the barrel must be rich in humus. A good compost and a quantity of turf will keep the plants strong and healthy for a season, and the beauty of the thing is that the fruit is kept clear of the soil. The barrel can be turned at intervals to give all the plants a share of the stronger light. IAN NIALL.
