The Irish mess
Sir: Following a criticism of Mr Mallory's contribution to the debate on Northern Ireland (July 17), on the basis of a lack of objectivity, Mr Utley (July 24) goes on to evoke by his emotional terminology — "betrayal of Ulster," " dishonouring of British obligations," etc., — the residential jingoism which can itself warp judgement. His theme goes contrary to the conclusions reached by, among others, General Tuzo, who stated on television that no final military solution is either possible or desirable, However, the nadir of Mr Utley's article is reached in its final paragraph, with the implication that eight Ulster Unionist votes in the October EEC debate, are for sale at the price of lives, British or Irish, on the streets of Belfast or Derry.
