Diary of a nobody
Sir: Every time that Max Hastings is given the hospitality of your diary slot (Diary, 31 July) he uses the space to tell us that he is `middle-class'. Why? Although I have never met them myself, I am informed that a sub- stantial proportion of the population of England is `middle-class', so there is noth- ing very interesting, or newsworthy, or novel, in the information that the editor of a sister-publication comes from this numer- ous but not very interesting sector of the population.
Would it not be more exciting if the diary were to be restricted to either chunky proles or intelligent patricians?
