COMMUNISTS IN BULGARIA

SIR.,—The news which has recently reached this country of large numbers of death sentences passed in Bulgaria on Communists calls for the serious attention of all those who hope for the early restoration of peaceful conditions in Europe.
History has shown repeatedly that violence breeds violence and savage punishments imposed for political offences so far from suppressing opposition breed fresh hatred and aggravated hostile action.
We understand that only one of these sentences has so far been actually carried out and we earnestly hope that the Bulger Government by commuting the others will exhibit those essential qualities of strong government, watchfulness combined with moderation.--Yours, &c., F.
