The determination of the General Council of the Trades Union
Congress and of thc group of employers headed by Sir Alfred Mond to open their Conference as soon as possible is an excellent pledge of earnestness. The first Meeting is fixed for Thursday, January 12th, and will be at .the RoyalSociety, Burlington House:---neutral territory. When the General Council appointed_ a sub: committee to advise upon subjects for discussion, very few people expected that the Conference could meet before February or March. In order to be able to name such an early date as January 12th; the sub=committee must have been:busy during the holidays. The first full- Conference; which will be rather unwieldly, as all the members of the General Council of the T.U.C. propose to be present, is not likely to do more than agree upon a general pro- graMme. A Joint Sub-Committee must almost neces- sarily be appointed.
