Brooks's, Boodles and balls
Sir: Your story about exclusion of Jews from clubs in America (Taboo or not taboo, that is the question', 19 November) recalls the furore in the tabloids when a dis- tinguished Jew was blackballed by Brooks's. When the tabloids crossed St James's Street and tried to involve the equally exclusive Boodles, the secretary replied icily, 'I have no idea how many Jews there are in Boodles. A member's religion is his own business.' The tabloids were silenced when it was revealed that the blackball had been played by an even more distin- guished Jew who was on the committee of Brooks's.
