From Mr John Gilroy Sir: Paul Johnson's memories of Harold Macmillan on the Tube (And another thing, 31 May) brought to mind a further memory of the PM on public transport by one George F. Penn, a guard on British Railways' London to Glasgow services, writing in the Railway Magazine (March 1960):

On another occasion the Prime Minister, Mr Harold Macmillan, was travelling to Birmingham, but the train was overcrowded, and he invited people to enter his reserved compartment. In fact, he arrived at Birmingham nursing a baby on his knee.
