You cannot be serious
From Dr C.J. Caldwell Sir: On reading your leading article (Nothing is "sustainable" ' , 31 August) 1 assumed that April Fool's day must have been moved to August at The Spectator. If I have understood correctly, since resources are finite we may as well gobble them up as quickly as we like with no thought or care for the consequences or needs of our children, and anyway 'technology' (as yet unspecified) will somehow make it all all right. The conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (comprising many of the world's leading climate scientists), which concluded that there is real evidence to suggest that climate change is happening, are airily brushed aside with the statement that global warming is 'a phenomenon which remains far from proven': it is interesting that no references are cited to support this assertion.
The environmental degradation which is resulting from the greedy and unnecessary consumption of the world's resources is a genuine cause for concern, and deserves more serious consideration than you have given it.
