The porn debate

Sir: Mr Don Peters says I abuse those who don't agree with me, and seems to place me among those who cry "lay down your intelligence and follow me."

I am angry, not with those who argue against me, but with those who refuse to allow my arguments — cool, rational and I hope sometimes intelligent — to exist. The New Statesman, Listener and The Times (I repeat) have not reviewed one of the last seven books I have published on education, culture and psychology. Other leading papers have refused to discuss more than one; some refuse to publish anything by me, or by intelligent journalists seriously and rationally about my work. Some have spoken of 'black lists': others `arrange' replies to my letters, etc.

One major effect is that publishers are now wary of publishing my work, not because I am argued against, but because I am either ignored or blackened. A a professor wrote recently in the 'Times,' the irrationality is all on the 'other' side today — among those who posture as guardians of freedom and toleration. I abuse them for their treachery — and the way they have ignored at least 400,000 words of calm argument, in my larger works, which Mr Peters cannot have read, to speak of me as he does.
