A strike has begun among the seamen of the port
of London. The Board of Trade had not answered a memorial lately presented, on the grievances inflicted by the Mercantile Marine Bill ; a meeting of sailors was held at the Temperance Hall in Ratcliffe Highway last night, to consider this non- reply; and it was resolved that from this Saturday, "the seamen of the port of London shall not go near a ship or shipping-office until the Board of Trade return an answer to their memorial."
The extensive manufacturing premises of Messrs. Ogleby and Co., wax- chandlers and oil-refiners, in Paradise Street, Lambeth, were destroyed by fire last night, with great damage to surrounding buildings. Five other fires occurred last night, at one of which a poor woman lost her life.
The trial of Thomas Drory, for the murder of Jael Denny, at Dodding- hurst, commenced at Chelmsford yesterday. No new feature of interest is disclosed by the report of the proceedings.
