SIR,—A propos of your interesting article in the Spectator of October 25th on the ancient friendship of the English for the Italians, the following quotation from the " Diilogns de

Morte" of Jerome Carden, who visited England in 1552 when Edward VI. was King, may interest your readers. Speaking of the English, Cardan says :—" Habitus, qualis Italis; se enim.propiores illis libenter jactant, ideoque student quantum possunt moribus ac vestitu eos imitari."—I am, Sir, &c., F. R. S.
