Ageing makes you fat
From Margaret Miller Sir: Ninety per cent of men advertising for 'true love' require that women be thin ('My love agony' by David Lovibond, 25 August). Because they are in denial about their age and changed physical features, they want women to look like girls. Of course the women who responded to Lovibond are not slim — girls in the main are slim, women more substantial, Boys have hair and trim bellies; men, like Lovibond himself, tend to baldness and jowls. There are obvious sound biological reasons for the deposits of body fat, which are not associated with gluttony or laziness but with reducing the risk of thinning hones. But really, why bother explaining that to someone who is as embarrassed about spending ten years with the same woman as if he had kept a model car long after it was fashionable?
