Down but not out

Sir: Like Jeffrey Bernard (Low life, 20 March) I fell over an uneven paving stone in Chelsea recently.

My face hit the pavement first, as I was hurrying. Too late, I discovered that if you have a measure or ruler about you and can prove that the discrepancy is above a cer- tain height in centimetres you can claim compensation from 'the council'. An aged friend of mine who broke a bone did that and got over a grand, I heard. Too late for Jeffrey, I wonder?
