The Daily Chronicle states, apparently with authority, that the Duke

of Connaught has intimated that he is not a- candidate for the post of Commander-in-Chief, "at least at present." That is a satisfactory announcement, and will leave the Government unembarrassed in their choice of the best man to fill the post of Commander-in-Chief. It should be remembered that the office to be filled up will not be the same as that held by the Duke of Cambridge, but one modified in accordance with the proposals of the Hartington Commission.
