daughter of an impoverished noble family at Blois, marries, after the French manner—as a matter of family convenience—Gaston, son of a wealthy manufacturer. She finds her heart wake up at the presence of an ardent young preacher of Socialism, but finds in the end that she can give her love where it is due. This is a bare outline of a story which is told with considerable force, and with no little knowledge of French ways of thinking and habits of life. The sceptical, scoffing old Marquise, Christine's grand- mother, is a particularly well drawn figure.
