A correspondent writes to us that Unionist Associa- tions in

the Carlisle district are being invited to pass resolutions for the abolition of the Carlisle experiment in Temperance reform. He even expresses the belief that the Associations can safely count upon the approval of the Home Secretary, by whose Department the experi- ment is now administered. If an attempt is made to pass these resolutions, we hope that Unionists will resist vigorously. Many people who by no means believe in State ownership of the drink trade are grateful for the Carlisle experiment. Every serious person wants some more Temperance reform of some sort or by some means, and the Carlisle experiment, which is a remnant of War control, has been a stimulus by conspicuously raising the level of public-house management in its area.
