At a plenary sitting of the Democratic National Convention on

Tuesday, Governor Cox, of Ohio, was nominated Democratic candidate for the American Presidency. The nomination was not effected till the 44th ballot. The proceedings of the Con- vention had been long and exhausting. Even the general enthusiasm of the occasion and the sharp strife of the factions could not disguise the tedium of the long succession of ballots. When it was realised that Mr. Cox had received the necessary two-thirds majority, Mr. MeAdoo's manager mounted the platform and moved that the nomination be unanimous. The answer was a roar of assent. It is a remarkable coincidence that Mr. Cox and his Republican rival, Senator Harding, are not only both citizens of Ohio but have had almost identical careers. Both began life as printers and then became in due course journalists and newspaper proprietors.
