Friday's papers contain very serious news from Johannes- burg. It

appears that on Wednesday the Chinese coolies in the Croesus Mine rose and attacked the white quarters. One white man was killed and others were injured. The coolies have now, it is said, quieted down, but have not returned to work. The origin of the dispute seems to have been a quarrel between a white miner and a "European" overseer of the coolies. The Chinese policemen took the side of the overseer and blew their whistles, with the result that the coolies swarmed out and attacked the white quarters. Some of the facts reported seem to indicate that the Chinese have already formed a secret organisation. We are content to record the event without comment.
