PEBBLES on the surface of the moon were photographed in minute detail by the Russian Luna 9, and scientists predicted a man in the moon in three years' time. Heavy betting fol- lowed. Meanwhile the Queen was in the Carib- bean and Mr. Selwyn Lloyd in Rhodesia, where in one day he managed to see thirty- four people between breakfast and bedtime. President Johnson announced agreement on a policy of increased military effectiveness with South Vietnamese leaders in Honolulu and sent his Vice-President to lay the foundations of a Great Society in Saigon; while Mr. Wilson supported him in the House of Commons against open opposition from the Labour left. The Government's majority dwindled again, with the death of the MP for Falmouth and Camborne, but it was reliably reported that the Prime Minister breathed no word to his henchmen of an election campaign.
