Delicious salad

Sir: Is young Mr Morley, your dramatic critic, suggesting that my entirely charming cast in Salad Days is not performing Julian Slade and Dorothy Reynolds's text accu- rately (Arts, 4 May)? Or has he failed to recognise the small adjustments made with Julian's enthusiastic agreement? These in lieu of the 'drastic retouching' he demands, which would most likely have taken the show right out of its period.

A woman in Malvern regretted the elimi- nation of the 'sand dance', which did not exist in the original production of this much-loved musical. I realise that, like all good dramatic critics returning to review a classic, Mr Morley will have immersed him- self in the script in a period of devoted study; but are not the Malvern fan's memories and his vaunted recall similarly suspect?
