Sir: It has come to something when The Spectator extends

two-thirds of a page to an uncritical, quasi-sophisticated celebration of bullfighting: nothing of the deliberate brutality to weaken the bull before entry into the ring; nothing of the unabashed (and safe) sadism of the picadors; no details of the bungled kills.

As an involuntary participant in the Common Agricultural Policy, I have no choice but to subsidise the breeding of bulls for these spectacles, but I was surprised to find The Spectator advertising this unpleas- ant and commercialised bloodlust. For shame, sir.

To avoid misunderstanding: yes, I have witnessed bullfighting; no, I have no truck with animal rights activities.
