record than a prolonged French bombardment of the. German lines, POSTAGE AMEGAD ID. but this has been of an extraordinary character. It has been intensely heavy, and has continued day and night for more than a fortnight. In the Argonne the Germans have made fresh attacks with the help of a large number of asphyxiating shells. At some points they gained a foot- ing in the French first-line trenches, but the French counter-attacks seem to have retrieved nearly all • the ground. General Joffre, who arrived in Turin yesterday week, paid a two days' visit in company with the King to the fighting lines on the Isonzo front, during which he made the acquaintance of General Cadorna and other Generals, and discussed the co-operation of the Entente Armies.
