12 JULY 1968, Page 30

Sir: I am in full agreement with Christopher 1-1,*iis (14

June).

Those of us who remember the flourishing days of county cricket will take the view that the decision to allow an increased importation of overseas players is a retrograde step.

What has become of county pride? Three years ago Worcestershire won the county championship without a single Worcestershire- born player in the side. Could anything be more farcical?

It is well known that county cricket is languishing. This is due in part to the fact that some counties make no serious effort to foster and encourage local talent. They prefer the easier way of getting their cricketers from abroad.

Mr Weidberg's statement in your issue of 5 July that most county players favour the inclusion of overseas players is simply not true. F. R. Cumberbirch The Bungalow, Harlow Moor Road, Harrogate
