A thoroughly bad bargain

Sir: Any ministerial interference with the due processes of the law gives cause for grave concern, and the Government's reported intention of trading the Krogers for the unfortunate Brooke raises an issue infinitely more important than any men- tioned in your leader (21 June).

By what right does the Government presume to rescind sentences passed by learned judges on criminals found guilty in the courts? Does not such interference constitute a contempt towards the British judiciary and bring the law into disrepute?

If the Government proceeds with this policy it may secure the release of an innocent, though foolhardy, Briton; but in doing so it could well be sowing the seeds of dictatorship in this country and the consequent enslavement of us all.
