For me, easily the most satisfying revelation of the week

was that there really is a Joan Hunter Dunn. John Betjeman's enchanting 'Subaltern's Love Song' has been part of my repertoire of songs in the bath for some years. And there sud-

denly, in the Sunday Times colour supplement, she was. Now Mrs. X, she looks still exactly as she ought to look : nice and wholesome and jolly.

But I trust this 'where are they now?' lark won't be taken too far. Is there, for example, a real person behind another and a less pleasant member of Betjeman's squad of beefy women tennis players—Pam, you great big mountainous sports girl'?

Do you remember:

See the strength of her arm, as firm and hairy as Hendren's;

See the size of her thighs, the pout of her lips as, cross, And full of a pent-up strength, she swipes at the rhododendrons . .

Try identifying her at your peril.
