We publish an article this week, cliaracteristically full of ideas,

by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, on the parking of cars in large towns. We desire to differ from Lord Montagu on only one point. For a long time we have had our eye on the scarcely used privately owned squares of London as fresh lungs for the over-crowded population. We cannot believe that the tenants or owners of houses which are built round these private gardens would really refuse to make the sacrifice when the essential importance of using them for the public health was made plain. Lord Montagu, however, suggests that they should be used for parking cars. We think that if and when they are made over for the public use they could serve a very much better purpose than Lord Montagu proposes, though, of course, we entirely agree with him about the necessity of solving the parking problem. If we do not think out this prob- lem while there is yet time the congestion of London is sure to become much worse -before it is better. We should like to hear how this problem is dealt with in New York and other large American cities where it must have been even more acute than in London.
