THE LETTERS OF THE LATE JAMES MeNEILL WHISTLER.

[TO THE EDITOR OF TIIR "SPECTATOR."] SIE,—We are directed by our client, Miss Birnie Philip,.-to ask your permission to state that she contemplates the publication in due course of the late Mr. Whistler's letters. Miss Birnie Philip is the sole executrix and legatee under the late Mr. Whistler's will, and she has in her possession copies of some hundreds of letters written by him which he left to her to publish when she should think fit. Miss Birnie Philip considers that the time is approaching when the letters should be published, and in order to enable her to prepare for this she will be very glad if any one having letters written by the late Mr. Whistler in their possession will lend them to her. Communications may be addressed to Miss Birnie

our address, and we undertake on Miss Birnie Philip's behalf that the most scrupulous care shall be taken of any letters lent to her, and that they shall be returned to the lenders immediately copies have been made of them.—We are, Si.,
