Undeceived Roman or Anglican. By the Author of "A Voice

from the Sea." (.7. W. Allinglutru.)—It would be bard to say that the Rev. Mr. Charteris is not a possible character. Bigotry and ignorance com- bined are capable of much. Yet it is almost impossible that an English clergyman should be so ignorant of his obligations as to refuse to bury a parishioner, because he had been in the habit of attending a Dissenting chapel. Anyhow, such a man should not be made a type. Another thing which we do not understand is how the cynical Evelyn of the first chapter becomes the devoted pastor of the last. Undeceived belongs to a class of tales for which we cannot profess any liking, nor do we see anything in it which makes us think better of them than we did. Still we respect the author's purpose, and willingly acknowledge that it is executed with considerable skill. Possibly there are people who may be convinced in this way of what is undoubtedly true,—that not a few Anglicans are doing the work of Rome.
