A White Paper issued by the Admiralty on Tuesday gave

some interesting figures showing the relative rate of increase in the expenditure of the Great Powers upon their Navies during the last ten years. The most rapid increase is that of Austria (163 per cent.), while Japan comes next (137 per cent.), and Germany third (119 per cent.). On the other hand, British expenditure has only grown at the rate of 43 per cent., a rate which is exceeded by Italy and the United States in addition to the three countries already mentioned. In actual increase as opposed to rate of increase Great Britain stands highest, with £13,389,000, against Germany, with £11,987,000. It may be added that the total expenditure upon the British Navy in the current year is more than double that upon the German.
