On Saturday Li Hung Chang visited the statue of General

Gordon, and as a mark of respect to his old friend placed on the pedestal a wreath of China asters. The ceremonial observed, which was witnessed by a considerable crowd, was purely Eastern in spirit. The Chinese Grand Secretary, attended by his suite, advanced to the base of the statue, and publicly saluted it with a low bow. The crowd, it is said, was much impressed by the act, which was characterised by great dignity. Li Hang Chang also attended a dinner given at the

Crystal Palace on Monday, and then witnessed a magnificent display of fireworks, which he admitted went beyond any- thing he had seen at home or even in China, the original home of pyrotechny.
