Outlines of Ancient History. By Harold Mattingly. (Cambridge University Press.

108. 6d. net)—This is the first of three volumes in which the Syndics of the Cambridge University Press propose to summarize the history of the world. Mr. Mattingly begins with Babylon, and brings the story down to the fall of the Western Empire in 476. In spite of the immense compression involved, his book presents a broad and interesting view of the development of the ancient world, and is as readable as such a summary can be.
