Iraq's French connection
From Mr Alasdair Ogilvy Sir: Your correspondent Dr Metzger (Letters, 8 February) is one of the Old Europeans whom The Simpsons refers to as 'surrender monkeys'. His pessimistic forecast that 'a mire of corruption' will develop following Saddam's defeat seems to him to outweigh Saddam's corruption of the freedom and self-determination of every one of his subjects. For him, this is a good enough excuse to sit back and leave the mustachioed monster in power, whether deprived of his mustard gas or not.
Of course it would be better that the peace-keeping force left in Iraq should be 'international' rather than American. The Americans themselves neither want to be, nor would wish to be seen as, an occupying power, hying been the liberators. My suggestion would be the French, whose Iraqi relationship remains the strongest of the Western powers. No one could accuse them of seeking to overthrow Saddam.
