Sir: Mr Clive Jenkins is to be congratulated on focusing

attention on a very important matter. The "huge slush funds" devoted to EEC promotion are in sharp contrast to the pittance upon which the "antis" operate. This anomaly must be resolved. Either funds must be made available to the Noes or else the Yesses must forgo the financial support they enjoy at present. Unless some arrangement of this kind is made, the referendum will neither be, nor will be seen to be, a reputable political exercise.

The principle here involved has wider implications. The stringent rule, limiting the amount a candidate may spend on his election, shows a concern that seats should not be bought, as they once were. Yet the party can (and does) spend sums quite unavailable to a non-party candidate. This anomaly should also be resolved.
