• The volume of the Proceedings of the British Academy

for 1927 (H.-Milford, • 30i.)- contains, as usual, some important papers on philosophy, history; literature and art. We may mention at least three of these. Professor Stenton's Raleigh lecture on " The Danes in England " sums up the results of his years of research on land-charters and place-names in the Danelaw and suggests that the' Danish settlers set an example to' their Saxon "fellows- by upholding their personal rights as against feudal lords. Professor Lethaby describes with enthusiasm the early mediaeval paintings—especially the .thirteenth-century retable---,--at Westminster. Professor Alexander's weighty essay on " Artistic Creation and Cosmic Cre.ation " is intended to demolish the supposed analogy betw4ri the two, but 'goes further and provokes hard thinking.
