The news from the Near East is meagre. As has

always happened in the present war when great events are in progress and an undecided battle raging, an extinguisher has during the week come down on all sources of information at the front. Even Lieutenant Wagner is affected by it and has to condescend to vagueness. All we know is that the Turks are making something of a last stand on the Tchatalja lines, and that probably 400,000 men are there engaged. It would seem, however, that they are not likely to make a Plevna of it, and that the want of progress is due to the physical difficulties of the Bulgarians, bad weather, bad roads, and weariness, rather than to the Turkish army. In all proba- bility the extinguisher will be withdrawn within the next two days, and the result of the week's operations will be made clear.
