We have received the following letter from the Portuguese Legation

:— " The Portuguese Legation, having seen in a letter published in your trustworthy journal of November 9th the phrase, 'Portugal cannot, or will not, govern her colonies properly, &c.,' takes the liberty of protesting against such an affirmation, which does not correspond in any way with the truth, it being certain that Portugal cannot be considered, according to its resources, inferior under a moral, philanthropical, and economical point of view, to other Colonial Powers, even surpassing some of them in its enormous efforts to carry civilization into those unexplored places, with tremendous sacrifices both of lives and money. The Portuguese Legation will be highly gratified by the publication of this protest in your next issue."
