Sir: Well Done! You are to be congratu- lated on

your courageous leading article concerning the future of Hong Kong. There is no doubt in my mind that the measures you suggest would, if taken, have the most salutary effect on both the Chinese government and the people of the Colony.

All except one of your suggestions could be implemented: it is nothing less than a tragedy that the quite unnecessary im- migration of millions from the Indian sub-continent and the West Indies which British Governments allowed — nay, en- couraged — since the early 1950s has now resulted in our being in no position to meet our moral responsibility in respect of offer- ing these deserving Hong Kong citizens a refuge in Britain.

In view of this, and whatever develops, one thing is certain: the Gurkha battalions which protect Hong Kong must be main- tained at full strength — and possibly reinforced — until a satisfactory and guaranteed future for this small jewel of Empire is established.
