When at his best these reproductions of famous portraits are very fine, and more like the originals than the now fashionable mezzo- tints. The tendency to use lines rather wide apart sometimes produces a dazzling effect. Mr. Cole succeeds better as a rule with portraits than with landscapes, though his version of the "Fighting Temeraire " is a fine piece of work ; a photograph, however, would have suggested Turner's brio of handling.
