Sunday Entertainments The Sunday Performances (Regulation) Bill which has been

published is the expected compromise. It enables local authorities to license on Sundays " musical enter- tainments, cinematograph entertainments, exhibitions of animals or of inanimate objects, and debates." The borough council or county council before granting a licence must pass a general resolution in favour of Sunday performances, but must even before that satisfy itself that there is a " substantial demand " for such performances. The method of testing the " substantial demand " is to give due notice by advertisement of the intention to pass the general resolution. The local authority will then consider the representations made to it. The effect of the Bill is to bring within the law the distance to which practice has outrun obsolete statutes. * * * *
